Also side note, I got the vinyl last month and it’s the only version of the album where “How Many Drinks?” is uncensored for some reason lol. 2012 sophomore album from the Grammy nominated singer/songwriter. For them, the trade-off is that they heard the majority of 2012's most pleasurable pop-R&B album digital Advent calendar style. The small quantity of new material makes Kaleidoscope Dream anticlimactic for some.
It’s still one of the better albums of 2012 for sure which is saying a lot cause there were so many fucking classics that came out that year. Kaleidoscope Dream includes some of the ADC songs in varying form, as well as the six songs from the July and September album-preview EPs. But it’s when he starts venturing towards the more artful side of writing that it kinda falls a little flat for me. There’s some singles from that album that are fucking perfection though like “Adorn”, “How Many Drinks?” and even deep cuts like “Pussy is mine” which highlight Miguel’s strengths as a singer and R&B/Pop writer. Also I feel like some verses and choruses don’t really stick the landing melodically, like Miguel just stuck with the first melody that came to mind. Kaleidoscope Dream takes him down a new path of musical exploration with groundbreaking cutting edge precision. There’s some songs that don’t really go anywhere or that build up to some anti climatic instrumental ending like the title track for example. Full and accurate LYRICS for Kaleidoscope Dream from Miguel: Oh yeah body language like piano keys, Allow me to provoke babe, You can sing the melody. But if I’m being honest I feel like kaleidoscope dream has way more low points compared to channel orange lyrically and musically. I’ve actually been revisiting it a lot this past month and have had similar thoughts to you.
